WOW! It’s been a long time since our last post!
Vacation is over (well, next week is Carnaval so… another whole week off!) but I’m really excited about the fact that we have so many cool things to discuss this semester.
The past 2 weeks have been dedicated to the topic Electricity. We’ve been reviewing concepts from 7th grade, clearing doubts, dealing with misconceptions (no, electrons don’t carry energy in a current and wires are not empty tubes waiting to receive electrons from a battery) and incorporating new concepts to our unit.
Students had the opportunity to, in our first day, build an electromagnet and play with it. The goal was to try to think about how it worked and how the principle behind this could make our lives easier. They also had to build a simple electric motor and bring it to school to show everyone. It was great! Different motors, different levels of difficulty, some worked, some didn’t. It didn’t matter. What mattered was that students had a challenge in front of them, faced problems, had to solve them, got frustrated… and all of it contributed to their learning.
